I was wonderin' if anyone has ever made their own eyewash solution and what potential safety concerns or violations this might cause. I'm certain that the eyewash solution manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank. Can anyone recommend a cost effective concentrated additive? -Russ

Although rather expensive, you have to realize they had to go through extensive testing to prove their product safe. This probably cost them extensively. So once the formula has been deemed safe, they just pass this cost onto the consumer. Not to mention all the lawsuits they have to endure every year. This cost is also passed onto the consumer. So to protect yourself, be very careful of what you put in your eyewash station.

I hope no one tries to tell you how to make a "safe" solution, that after 2 years ferments into alcohol, or becomes moldy with bacteria - only to cause more damage. I'm not affiliated to any safety company but have been involved with a couple of "unsafe" lawsuits. You'd be amazed what people get away with on both sides.

I would not want to be the guy responsible for a non-FDA approved eyewash in my first aid cabinet, for a lot of reasons. #1 is what could happen to someone if it went bad, #2 is what my executives would do to me for putting the shareholders at risk. :

my God !!! and I thought I was under pressure to introduce cost savings !

look elsewhere mate ! you cant put a price on health and safety ..if my boss even hinted at something like that - we would be having a major fall out. . .

I figured as much. I guess I'll go buy some saltwater that costs more than wine.

Do you really use it that often in your facility that this would actually be a good cost-cutter? Maybe there are some different prevention steps that need to be implemented. Safety glasses?

I flush the stuff every 4 months as recommended. Now, if I can break from the maintenance requirement it would seem to be much more reasonable. I would not try to make an antibacterial saline solution. I was really curious if anyone had tried it, though. -Russ

1) Are you sure that what you're considering is legal in the workplace?

2) Does the legality concern you or whomever is in charge?

Would you be able to use a piped water eye wash system? That way the water is always fresh. I'm sure I saw a variety of such sytems when I was looking for a stand for our eye wash station. The big problem of course is if you don't have plumbing where you want the station. The closest we have plumbing is behind the board washer but we can't have the eye wash station so inaccesible.

"Would you be able to use a piped water eye wash system? That way the water is always fresh."

That's what you would think, but I've heard otherwise. If you don't flush them out regularly, the water will sit in the pipes and start coroding them. If the pipes are steel, this means your water will come out a nice shade of rust when you finally have a need to use the eye wash station. I don't think iron oxide is necessarily bad for your eyes, but the thought of washing my eyes out with orange sludge kind of grosses me out.
