Hi SMTnetters, I have a white residue coating all over my reflow oven innards (almost looks like white fungus). How can I absolutely be certain that it’s flux and not anything else?are there any tests available for this? I am planning to check the oven exhaust for correct air flow rates…..anything else I should be looking out for? We are using a water soluble halide free flux and SnPb solder

Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom

I had something similar a while back it looked like fibreglass insulation in my case (was using no clean flux not water based), i took some and melted it with a soldering iron and it reacted like flux. and i tried disolving it with acetone.

did you manage to get rid of it? if so, what steps did you take to eliminate it?

Do a FITR analysis of this white material to help direct you in eliminating the choices. What do your paste and board suppliers say?

I have always attributed to flux and "lint".

lint from what?...also roughly how often do you clean the oven? (not the heated chamber) but other areas to keep them clean? The operator say he has had to do it twice in 2 weeks to keep it clean due to the residue

lint from the factory conditions, enviromnent you know.

We clean every 6 mos. you seem to be accumulating quite rapidly. unless you are cleaning at the first spec of this showing up

we didnt see it as a potential risk, main accumilations we around the entry and exit curtains so we lived with it and cleaned (quick wipe with acetone) once a week.
