When the fab people cut a V-groove for depaneling, do they use a lubricant on the router or do they cut it dry?

They cut it dry. Most shops use a rotating blade, some use 'skiving' just pushing the PCB past a v shaped blade. Don't know how popular the latter is anymore though.

I think I phrased that poorly. I'm talking about cutting the V-groove into the panel by the fabricator so that it can be depaneled later.

Or did you understand me perfectly? :P

I ask because your description sounds like the depanelers I've seen used in assembly shops.

Nope, you phrased it perfectly, and I knew what you were asking. The equipment is very similar in concept, except on the fab side it has much tighter tolerances and a different blade type.

Hi Steve,

I would say that 98 % of score shops do them dry, When the product gets back to the board house they would run the panel through a rinse dryer to get the score dust off of the Panel, Most Score machines have Vacuums built into the cutter heads to help reduce the dust, but even with the vacuum the panels are still pretty dusty.

Are you asking this because of a dust contaminate issue or our you concerned about fractures?

It's dust contamination. Most of the boards have loose dry dust on them but a few have what looks like a dried slurry.

Either way I'm not impressed. This is the second batch, the first one had obvious *visible* shorts on boards that were alledgedly tested.
