Intrusive reflow component selection | 10 July, 2006

Hi,

We have a new product coming soon that has a fair number of PTH sockets and headers. I was thinking that it would be good to use intrusive reflow on some of them to even up cycle times between SMT and hand insertion, however, when i called the distributer they reckon that the components aren't suitable for reflow temperatures, i'm not so sure about this. I've looked up the "datasheets" on the website but they are nothing more than catalogue pages. Most of the components have gold over nickel plated leads and the bodies are rated to UL94V-0. Should that be sufficient to withstand reflow temps (this will be a leadfree process)?

cheers

If you can, get some samples and just let them run through your oven a couple of times, they dont need to be mounted, just place them on top of some FR4, you'll find out soon enough if the plastic will hold.

Hi Dougs,

Check out the PBTs (Peak Body temperatures)and time at these temperatures. Remember that they sit higher in the ovens than most other parts.

If you have problems getting that data I should have it for Tyco, JAE, Hirose, Harting & a couple of other manufacturers.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thats the thing, there seem to be no datasheets available, only catalogue pages on the distributers website. PBT is not listed on these pages. I'm thinking about takin g the other suggestion and running a couple of samples through the oven a couple of times to see if there is any warping, discolouration or damage to the components. Is there anything is should be considering with regards to stencil design if it turns out we could do this.

cheers

Hi Dougs,

I think I'm going to have to admit to some insider knowledge here. It kind of gave it away when you mentioned there were only catalogue pages instead of specs.

http://www.anglia.com/product_search/part_tracker/index.asp

I think you may still have to register first.

Type in the part no. and then click on the "i" if it is a ROHS Compliant part & it gives out PBT, MSL etc. (Well in most cases anyway).

Only parts sold by the particular company will be on there.

Here's an example for a Murata Chip Cap:

Part overview Part number: GRM32CF51A226ZA01L Manufacturer name: MURATA Description: GRM 1210 Y5V 22UF 10V -20+80% RoHS information RoHS status: Compliant 2nd level interconnect material: e3 - Sn Moisture Sensitivity Level: Unlimited Peak Body Temperature C/Sec: 260/5

Please note I have tried to avoid mentioning the company name where possible as this is not & should never become an advertising forum.

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Dougs, no Problem.

Regarding the 1/2 size DIN41612, I can only find one range that is PIHIR compatable, and then that is only the male parts - according to the manufacturers the female usually goes on the backplane which doesn't tend to get intrusive reflowed.

If it doesn't play havoc with your design & you can swap them around then it may be worth looking at 0923 148 2919 or 0923 348 2919 (with board locks); however neither are common parts, which screws up the supply chain when demand fluctuates.

If you want to try the frying method anyway then e-mail me via the forum & I'll sort you out some samples.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

I've decided at the moment to put them all over the wave, i'll keep looking into getting alternatives that are designed to be suitable and later on will hopefully switch some parts over.

many thanks again
