Has anyone tested their water in their Aqueous Cleaner for the RoHS banned substances? If so who are you all using? One of customers is requesting that we validate there is no contamination of their boards as we use 1 cleaner to clean lead free boards as well leaded boards. We do have a Ionic tester but I am not sure if it can test for the banned RoHS substances. Our military customer do not want any tin on their boards thus the dilema.

Trace Labs? what are you thinking? Razor, do you have a DI system? Maybe have the maker of this system come in to do analysis. Make a copy and send to your precious military.

I'm sure your local municipality's water quality department could hook you up with a lab to test your water for all sorts of things, but you might just open up a whole new can of worms in the process.

Trouble is, testing your wash or rinse water doesn't necessarily paint a picture of what's left (or not left) on your boards.

Good point steve, I thnk that is where Chunks was going when he rec'd trace labs, they are excellent for surface analisys. doubt is cleaner manufacturer could do that.

Oh yeah, be careful about inviting your local government into your facility. I did it years ago and ended up with monthly visits and a sewer monitor gizmo in our waste pipe. Not that we were doing anything bad, but the attitude we received was bad.

We have our waste water tested periodicially by a local lab to ensure that we are in compliance with local discharge regulations and as part of ISO14001 approval. This analysis includes levels of metals as well as organics, but it will tell you little about what remains on the surface of the assemblies.

Ionic testing will not tell you about contamination of assemblies with RoHS banned substances either. If you need to know what's on the surface after cleaning try something like EDX.
