GSM Camera Focus | 23 August, 2006

I just installed a new CCD in a 4.0 mil upward looking camera - GSM. It's working well but is slightly out of focus. Do I adjust focus by moving the lense in and out of the camera mount or do I use the ring that is actually part of the camera that has the two allen set screws in it. Thanks--

On the camera lens, there should be a ring to adjust aperature and one to adjust the focus. Sometimes an extension piece is needed between the camera and the lens.

If you bought this camera from Universal, it should come focused correctly. I had one of the first 0.5 mil cameras for flip chips. I used it for years and it was out of focus. I finally convinced Universal that something was wrong and they replaced the camera free of charge. I don't think you should need to focus the camera yourself unless you did not buy the camera from Universal.

Thanks for the advice. This is not a Universal camera. I removed the lense from a "blown" camera and installed a new CCD that I bought from a camera shop. I only see one ring that can be adjusted on the camera itself. Not sure if it's aperture or focus but I guess I could try it. Or... do I need to adjust focus by unscrewing the lense from the camera housing a few turns??? I scored the position of the lense in the holder on the machine and re-installed it in its original position, too.

If You adjust the focus to perfection, You still need the UIC GSM calibration kit, so that the machine will know where the spindles are according to the cameras (OTHC, P2P:s, fiducial camera), X-Y-Theta-spindles, nozzle changer, feederbanks and machine Zero. You also need to do a light calibration, since you don't use the exact same type of camera. If You don't do do this, I can guarantee that Your placement and possible the component recognition will be of... /Mka

SWAG, where did you get your replacement CCD? We've got a camera lying around that we could do some work on so we'd have a spare.

Seems to be working well. I didn't remove the housing from the machine = recal. The placements are right on, it's just a bit out of focus but the reads are doing fine still with few rejections. CCD is $350 or so I think - it's a big savings to have one on hand instead of whole camera assy. and easy to install. We carry a spare as it seems CCD failure is common for us. First signs are black/gray lines on the component image on screen. You might be a able to run for a while like this but it's best to put in a new CCD when this starts to happen. 1/2 hour install at most.

I used to get about 4 years out of a GSM camera. The entire assembly from UIC used to be about $10,000.00. And yes that does equal a machine calibration.
