SMTnet is looking for your input on a problem that has started to become serious... You may have noticed that the forum has had some spam posted... in the past serveral weeks in fact several hundred have been posted.

We are soliciting your views as to how we may best prevent this and keep this forum a valuable resource for your use. We have a policy of free posting for all componenets on the site, but with the exception of this forum simple registration is required. For registration, we ask just a few questions, see below, and we limit the use of your information. We simply ask for the demographics of our audience, similar to industry magazines. Registration asks for verification of a valid email address so we can track issues that may lead to problems.

For 11 years we have been fortunate to have so few problems with the forum, but now it is time for you the users to send us your thoughts. We want to have as few impediments to site usage / forum participation as practical.

Are the registrations automatic? such as approved once the email is verrified? maybe a manual approval or maybe a day wait time untill a new user can post.

another alternative is for moderators to periodically check the forums and delete spam, and the accounts.

Why not? Sounds like a good idea. Almost all other forums that I visit req. registration before posting. Another benefit is that it is possible to ban a member if acting improper on the forum. It should also be possible to report a posting to the staff that might be improper.

Only remember that if a member's computer has been hi-jacked or some malicious s/w ripped the user name & pwd from the pc; that machine can be used for placing spam, etc. whitout the user/owner notice. In such case the user should be allowed to another chance before the life time ban.

Keep up the good work! /Sincererly Ps. Spammers, trojan, spy and virus makers should buy a one way ticket and take the fast track to h... I'm dead tired of all their junkmail in my private e-mail, not to mention all the time, money and system resources that is needed to keep the security on my pc:s up to date. Ds.

I thought we were already registered? No? Shows how long I remember stuff.

Providing a confirmation link to the site in an email to the new registree seems like it might provide some security and deterrent to low-life spammers as well. Over and above that an IP tracer to delete repeat abusers is a good idea. Don't know how economically any of these are for a free site but they're worth some thought anyway.

I say keep haul them all, especially the dirt bags that send me those market investment "opportunities" pasted into pictures so I can't filter them by text. Grrrrrrr.

Roland is saying that the moderators have checked and deleted hundreds of spam postings in the past couple of weeks. The moderators can not delete accounts, because currently registration is not required.

Taking a different tact: * Technet has always required registration. * SMTINFO had to require registrations for the very reason that Roland describes. * SMT-In-Focus went off the air because the maintenance of spamers was too time consuming.

Will the forum be available to nonregistered lurkers on a read only basis?

A. The current registration process will remain for the time being (we are currently upgrading servers which will be followed by a complete site re-write later this year).

A. Yes, to lurkers, malingerers, skulkers and all the like.. ;))

BTW, if anyone wants to help support the upcoming SMTnet re-write with designers, programmers, financial support or any other ideas you may have, please let us know. Obviously the more help we have, the better we can make this site for everyone involved.

On the main Forum page, there is a check box for each thread to indicate that you want email notification of changes to that thread. The box is located just to the left of the title of the thread. Checking that box tells the SMTnet email machine that you would like an an email each time someone posts to that thread. So, if you uncheck that box, it might stop sending you emails. Then again ...

As a piece of unfortunate luck, the spamers have been using a SAC305 thread as a launch point recently. Tsk, tsk.

Yes, that's a great idea.. It'd be kind of like a "Yahoo! Groups" type page or blog site where it's possible to post pictures. That would really come in handy especially in a technical forum such as this where there are many situations that're easier to describe if one can attach a picture.

SMTnet, should start getting on the ball with this kind of stuff...there's tons of blog sites out there, that aren't that old either, that already has this capability.
