ESD Cutting board/mat | 2 March, 2007

Hi all,

We are looking at putting cutting boards into our goods in area - for opening sealed bags to check the contents and to aid in decanting, and would appreciate any relevant input.

The components should never come into direct contact with these boards, and we already use ESD mats and wrist straps (floor in here is not ESD due to the volume and weight of vehicluar traffic).

I'm thinking of using an extruded homopolymer polypropylene in about a 6mm thickness: http://www.partwell.com/products/business-unit-1/cutting-boards/pw90-product.html

Anyone else using or heard of something specialist? we have got one eye on possibly adopting ANSI/ESD 20.20 in the future.

I would recommend a dissipative piece of UHMW or polycarbonate. Many plastics or polymers generate and maintain harmful static fields so you want to consider something with electric integrity.

What are you cutting at incoming? Meat?

It doesn't matter that your troop are using ESD mats and wrist straps. Your proposed cutting board is an insulator. It a BIG piece of plastic. So, it will retain a charge. So when you move to adopting ANSI/ESD 20.20 in the future, you'll be throwing your cutting board in the dumpster or expaining to your boss why you need to buy and ionizing fan.

Instead, why not use a piece of ESD dissapative pallet material, like Durostone, Delmat, Durapol, Glastic?

Hi Dave, I'd love to use some of the durastone we have here, or some Durapol or Delmat (never used Glastic before though), however we need a compliant material for the blade to go into slightly, otherwise they tend to snap or skid, and then people get cut (even more than currently with their safety knives!) - unfortunately it's become an H&S issue.

We're only cutting open outer bags & boxes for resistors, caps , connectors etc. - the ESD sensitive stuff goes straight to our ESD control area.
