RF Shields | 11 March, 2007

Hi All,

I would like to get some advice from users who place rfshields pre-reflow and reflow onto board.

We ran a batch a few months back and boards which had the shields reflowed failed to function properly ~

I was happy enough that the profile was good as I ran quite a variety of profiles.

I am using no-clean solder (tried lead & leadfree ) no differnce in product performance.

Do I need to switch to ws paste to make this work - considering there are no issues with the boards that are reflowed without shields I am thinking not!

Search the fine SMTnet Archives, while you're waiting for others to respond. For instance: http://www.smtnet.com/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=1&Message_ID=46565

We are going to try clips from Autosplice, the small clips come on tape and reel which are placed by the machine and then reflowed. After reflow we install the shield.

You should tell your customer that they're very nice people, but the purpose of RF shields is reduce RF emissions, not to be a air or gas tight enclosure. The requirements of hermeticity are wholly different than those of RF shielding. Do they want a hermetic, RF shield?
