Has there been a Benchmark study done for Best-In-Class Cost Per Placement of components on PCBA?

Also, is there an industry standard to calculate cost per placement of components on PCBA?

Ask 10 cost accountants to cost out a PCBA and you will get a dozen answers. I think what you are asking about would be even more difficult than that effort to create a standardized BOM format.

You might want to contact Juki. There biggest sales pitch is that their machines have the lowest cost of ownership per placement.

Since they make the claim, you would have the right to say "Show me the nubmers".

Wrangling it from them requires some persiverance. * Frost & Sullivan [frost.com] published an extensive study of the placement machine market, but has not been updated since 2002. So, it may be a bit stale.

It also depends on how you cost your equipment - what you paid for it, how you depreciate it, and how much you put aside for replacing it.

Don't confuse cost of ownership and cost per placement. They are two different entities. Also, it's not enough to say it...it needs to be true. One supplier claims "low cost of ownership" but has equipment that requires $700 placement nozzles. I'm sure there are many ways to calculate this and all suppliers will come up with their own method that makes their equipment look the best. I would recommend looking for equipment that is simple in concept with low maintenance design. Ask about the cost of the consumables required as these are hard numbers. Statistics can be easily skewed.
