Hello,

On customer want to make a aluminium board. It will have SMD Led on it. Like I never "played" with this before can someone tell me what I know to know on that new thing. What kind of reflow profile we need. What just I be aware of, is there is some difficulties with this process.

Hi Karkanov,

Depending on how many devices they have, you may want to go spot solder with a laser system or light beam system. This worked well on some aluminum boards we did in the past.

We had no problems reflowing an assembly on Bergquist Thermal Clad. The assembly was small. So, we built it on a 8-up fixture. It stayed in the fixture from screen print, through pick and place, and into reflow. When the fixture came out of the reflow oven, it was hotter than a bull moose in mid-October. So, the assemblies would stay liquidous for a few minutes after exiting the oven. So, during that time, we had to be careful not to disturb the fixture until the solder set.

Some suppliers have peculiarities. Like IRC Anotherm substrates suggest "use of solder alloys containing silver is necessary, such as 62Sn36Pb2Ag or Sn96Ag4." Maybe your supplier can offer helpful guidance.
