Solder contamination on Golden Finger | 11 August, 2007

I am a fresh SMT engineer. I am now facing a problems, solder contamination on Golden Finger nearly about 1 year.

I don't know what going on. I have checked the cleaningness of stencil, solder paste handling,IR re-flow profile and even PCB surface finished.But the problem, "Solder contamination on golden finger" still exists in our production line. Pls advice on how to totally eliminate the root cause of the problems.

If you can not find the source of cotamination then apply masking to fingers until you do find source, single layer of Kapton tape or similar should not affect print thichness. This will eliminate scrap / rework in the mean time.

Check all your conveyor belts and clamping in your machines.

You have to follow these boards through entire process to see where it is coming from, it could be happening at a hand soldering operation as well.

I have checked all the method before, the problem still exists. Is there are more easy way for operator to visually check solder paste on golden finger? for example: using a special light as a tools for operator to identify the problems easily.

Your lighting would have to be pretty bad for it to be an issue.

My gut instinct tells me you have bigger systemic issues. Operators will either be your best friend or your worst enemy.

What percentage of boards have contamination? You might have to personally physically check boards on the line yourself. I would start at the input of the reflow oven.
