automatic insertion of radial components 3.5mm | 20 August, 2007

Hello all,

we are about to modify a Universal Radial 5 so the machine will be able to insert radial components with lead pitch 3.5mm and 5mm.

The 3.5mm components are ELCOs which are getting inserted all the way to the component body so they sit firm on the PCB.

We are planning to modify the carrier clips, the pusher and the insertion finger. We are planning to leave the clinch tooling unchanged and only misalign it a bit.

Has anyone already done a similar modification?

Wow. Never have, never would, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be done. Mostly it just seems impossible to design a carrier clip that could hold both well...more likely it would hold one well and the other poorly, or both poorly.

Anyway, is there no way you can get those parts lead formed and taped to normal specs, or do you need the narrower spacing on the board?

Manufacturing already tried to get a design change but no chance. I guess because the designer is afraid the components could get bent too much if they are mounted with a stand off. Of course everyone who has to manufacture this fist sais: why don't you use standard design rules with 2.5mm lead pitch so we can buy standard components taped with 2.5mm and insert these with standard machines. But there is really no chance to get a redesign and so those 3.5mm ELCOS have to get mounted - because of the danger of wrong polarization they should get mounted automatically if possible.

Regarding the modification of the carrier clips: we will do the modification for 3.5mm lead pitch only for the one wire diameter we have to place - 0.6mm. We will clamp both legs only for the 5mm components, for the 3.5mm component the one leg will get clamped and the other will sit in a 0.6 diameter notch milled into the outside edge of the 2.5mm spacing in the clip.
