Can anyone recommend an automated solder paste dispensing unit that works well and wont break my companys bank account? We are getting a bit pushed out by continuously purchasing one stencil after another. Thanks for any help any of you can offer from SMT land.

You could try taking a look at the jet printer from MYData. http://www.mydata.com/MYWEB/Corp.nsf/$all/C7BD0068DB97D290C12571E80052A528 I have no idea about price or how well it works but it sounds like an interesting replacement for stencil printing.

Replacing Screen Printer with a dispensing system? If you have large complex PCBs you will lose a bit of time to say the least. That being said, we have had great success with an I&J Fisnar 'bot with positive displacement (auger) valve for dispensing 20 mil dots of paste for BGA rework, plus some of the more specialized devices we build require this dispenser in order to replace ICs when doing repairs. I'm not sure if I would want to do production runs unless very small and non-complex assemblies. Programming is pretty simple, and cost is relatively low. We spent about $10K and so far the 'bot handles all thrown at it. But again, not for production, although I could see spending the time to program a small PCB for production.

No affiliation with I&J Fisnar. Just an end user.

Last I heard the Mydata MY500 jet printer was in the $275k-$325k range. If it does all they claim, I would love to have one. However, we only buy 45-50 screens each year and have only a small amount of rework due to paste errors that the MY500 would fix. When calculating ROI, we were in the 10-12 year range which is way higher than my company will allow.
