To anyone with extensive reflow experience,

We have an 8-zone reflow intended for reflow soldering of our lead-free models, but sometimes, we use the reflow for soldering of non lead-free. Does it holds true that our lead-free products may be contaminated with lead since we are loading both leaded and lead-free models in that reflow oven? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

Hi Eng. Yumex in our company we're using 9 zones air convection oven. When the technology on Lead Free came along conversion from non-lead free to lead free viceversa was frequently done but there's no problem on contamination. Where is your company mr. yumex? Hope in my little way I help you.

We use the same oven for both Pb and Pb-free assemblies. We have been for about two years. We have not seen any issues with contamination. I can't imagine how any Pb would end up in a Pb-free joint in the reflow oven. The Pb doesn't vaporize, the only physical contact the oven has with the PCB is on the edge of the board at the chains.

I disagree with the opinion what use the same reflow oven for both Lead and Lead-free process. As you know, the RoHs restrict the presence of certain substances, including Pb,Mercury,Cadmium,Hexavalent Chromium,PBB,PBDE. Maybe yon don't find any issue about solder joint or the Lead is limited, and you doni't assure other substances are below standard? We must answer for customer.

You are correct nobody mentioned anything about RoHS. And, right or wrong, our quality department's official stance is that "the only thing about RoHS we have to be concerned about in our industry is Pb". It is not just our quality department either, now that I think about it. It comes from the very top down.

If you only manufacture PC Boards with valid RoHS compliant componenets, then yes, your Pb is your only concern. If you add any type of other fastener, housing, wire, etc... it also must be RoHS compliant to be certified. Too many people focus on "lead free" and forget about the other components that will make you non-compliant.

You say stuff about RoHS and all the banned materials covered by RoHS, but what is your theory on how banned substances can get on a RoHS board if you are running both Pb and Pb-free on the same oven?
