We all know that Engineers are human and consequently may make errors when creating pick and place programs. (e.g. program a wrong part number for a given reference designator) Usually that is easy to detect since the wrong component is a differnt package, or has different markings. However, sometimes the error could be the same package, and may not have any marking on it (e.g. ceramic caps). I'm interested in what others are doing to check / validate new SMT pick and place programs to confirm they are correct. We're throwing some ideas around here, and your ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you; K

How are you using to program your pick and place? Unicam, CircuitCam?????

Unfortunately, we are currently manually creating the programs.

Our programs are created in an ASCII format ( we do not have Unicam or Circuit cam )So using Microsoft Excel,we open/load the finished PNP program and then we sort it by reference designator.

Still in Excel, we then open/load the BOM (in an ASCII) format and also sort it by reference designator.

Line them up and let Excel formula =if(X1=X1,"OK","NG") check ref designator and part number from the BOM vs PNP.

Works for us.

PS: Replace X on the formula by whatever cell your data is at. When the data on the cell matches, "OK" is displayed. When it doesn't "NG" is displayed instead.

Another software supplier that offers a a powerful CAD/BOM/AVL to SMT programs is Valors new VPlan Studio.

Best bang for buck NPI solution around today.
