RoHS round 2 | 26 March, 2008

Hi all,

I wanted to share this with yall, because its informative on what is to come but at the same time hilarious.

******************************************************** From Dr. Craig Hillman (DfR Solutions)

RoHS 2 Moves Forward (Run For Your Lives!)

The ko-Institut in Norway, tasked by the European Union to expand the materials covered by RoHS, has just identified 46 new substances for regulation.

The list is impressive. It includes: Nickel (as in nickel plating), Beryllium (as in copper-beryllium alloys), Gallium Arsenide (say good-bye to cell phones), Liquid Crystals (do you really need a display?) and Rosin (as in rosin flux).

Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) was not included, due to its recent approval by the EU.

With only one week to provide input (March 28th), this round of new restrictions is moving ahead quickly. The final result remains to be seen, but future electronics may have to be made from clay, rocks and paper.

hi Patrick,

they forgot copper, silver and gold. If they approve their list with the materials mentioned above, we don't have to worry any more. We can just go for another job. Where can I find the list by the way?

Good question - please post the list.

And what would the new symbol look like? A clear leaf?

List in attachment. If you carefully read the list the EU is planning to go back to the Stone Age. No further comments.

At what point do we just say enough is enough!! Screw the EU! If they want to continue down this path then let them, and the rest of the world will continue to advance and reap the benefits of technology...

Geeze, this is getting 'friggen rediculous!

Will clay, rock, and paper provide sufficient signal carrying capabilities without degrading signal strength or transmission speed, and further, will these materials exceed tensile strengths of traditional "metallurgical" solder joints?

I don't think it matters. Without insulation (did you see the plastics listings?) it's kind of a moot point.

CK,

Forget about all that sophisticated technical stuff. See picture of a RoHS 1&2 compliant vehicle (no electronics).

Patrick, it appears that there IS someone in Automotive that is unequivocably 100% RoHS compliant!

Thanks CK,

I was not aware that they were already working on a prototype.

Could this be the corresponding driver?

Patrick, yes, the gentleman above is just one of the people involved in this RoHS nonsense, but I think the world reacts (or over-reacts) to individuals such as the one below:

Here's a shop that's known to be RoHS compliant. They've got world-class process controls in place.
