We are a small OEM that runs a high mix/low volume environment. Typical runs are a couple or five hundred boards, one or two products per day. Currently, we are using a Quad DeHart SLC-20 semi-automatic stencil printer. (alignment is manual, printing is automatic, not inline) feeding a Universal GSM. We mostly work with 0603s and pitches down to .65mm, and for that our setup works great.

We're having to move to .5mm pitch for some parts. Our yields on the .5mm parts are terrible, and I'm sure the problem is our paste jobs. So, I'm thinking we need to upgrade our printer. Assuming I had, say, $12000 to spend on something quality and used, what direction would you recommend looking?

Throughput is almost a non-issue, as most of our boards are a few inches square. We need accuracy but not speed. There's no real benefit to us in using an inline machine as opposed to a hand-loaded machine.

Good Point. Also, what about the type of solder paste your using - Are you getting a good release from the stencil? What do your boards look like after you print?

The added benefit to MPM SP's is that, it forces the operator to look at quality. She won't have 2d or 3d to rely on. Also, it places heavy emphasis on a good setup.
