Fresh start on making boards | 2 May, 2008

Hi everyone,

I am an Electrical Engineer (BT). I am interested to start my own business on building up electronic boards (thru-hole and SMT). I have never done this work before except practice in college. My questions are:

1. What is the future status on thru-hole boars, are they going to stay for long time on a market?

2. Which market is greater "thru-hole" or "SMT"?

3. As a starter on what should I concentrate most?

4. How strong is the competition (I am based in New York). Do you think I will survive?

5. What kind of machines should I start with?

6. I do not have any product, so how can I get them?

7. How could I advertise my business and where to get costumers who want from me to built them electronic boards.

Thanks in advance Deni

I am Indian and a guru in industry so let me answer questions one by one

1. What is the future status on thru-hole boars, are they going to stay for long time on a market?

TRU-HOLE MAKING A BIG COME BACK. THEY COME IN THE LEADFREE NOW.

2. Which market is greater "thru-hole" or "SMT"?

I TELL YOU INVEST IN THE TRU-HOLE

3. As a starter on what should I concentrate most?

YOU NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON THE SOLDERING IRONS. IMPORTANT FOR LEADFREE.

4. How strong is the competition (I am based in New York). Do you think I will survive?

IT'S PERFECT TIME TO MANFACTURE IN U.S.

5. What kind of machines should I start with? YOU NEED TO BUY THE EQUIPMENTS THAT SOLDERS AND PLACES PARTS ON THE BOARDS

6. I do not have any product, so how can I get them? YOU SHOULD RUN AN AD TO ALL MANFACTURERS

7. How could I advertise my business and where to get costumers who want from me to built them electronic boards.

Don't ask us. 70% of the people posting on this forum are contactors.

Suggestions are: * Read and commit to practice: "Cold Calling Techniques" Schiffman, S; Adams Media 1999 [1580628567] and "Little Red Book Of Selling" Gitomer, J; Bard Press 2004 [1885167601] * Get in your car and drive to every potential customer within a two hour radius of where you plan your plant and ask them what they want.

Judging from the questions you ask, the answer to #4 is no.

If you really want to succeed I suggest you go work for a CM and learn the trade. Either that or team up with Bash the SMT tech and start a comical fly on the wall series for Discovery. I'ld watch it!
