"Ionization of the air causes an increase in conductivity..."

I have an Ionograph and everytime I open the test lid cover the Baseline Stabilization Resistivity Value s by 60M Ohm-cm. My question is:

Is there something to worry about our facilities air quality when it comes to ESD?

Is your air dirty or what? I'm not sure what you're asking, actually, but for my money I'd be more concerned with maintaining RH levels at from 40-60% and just keeping dirt levels "reasonable".

We use a Charge Plate Monitor (CPM) tp monitor the balance of our ionizers, according to ANSI ESD STM3.1. Maybe you could use a CPM to assess the ionizing radiation in your plant.

The more we think about it, we feel you could use a Geiger-Mueller (G-M) probe, also. Use an end window G-M rather than a "pancake" type G-M tube, because it has a longer tube. There is probably some state supported safety organization that can measure this for you.

How do you get your X-ray machine checked out? We had the tube replaced and they checked it then otherwise we would have the same guy we had in last year to check it out. But in any case we have a radiaton survey done at least once a year. I assume either one would have advised us if we had a problem with ionizing radiation in our plant.

He has the equipment for other business but since it can also check X-ray machines he is happy to charge a few hundred dollars to check ours out. And it's a lot cheaper than flying someone from Cali to T.O..

Its not likely your air quality that lowers the test solution's resistivity. Maintaining 60 M-Ohm requires almost constant circulation through DI resin beds. Just natural CO2 (Carbon dioxide) absorbed by the test solution will lower the resistivity. Be sure to keep all hands, dirty tongs, and anything other than boards away from the test solution. Keep the lid closed when not in use and minimize the time the lid is removed when ing and removing a board.
