I was talking with a friend of mine the other day about component footprint verses component body size. He said the footprint is the body size, it this true? I always saw them as being different.

One common definition of a SMD footprint is: A typical SMD footprint, is composed of: * Solder lands (conductive pattern) * Solder resist pattern * Occupied area of the component * Solder paste pattern (for reflow soldering only) * Area underneath the SMD available for tracks * Component orientation during wave soldering.
