OSP coating verification | 29 September, 2008

We are having problems with a specific lot of boards wave soldering. I need a way to prove the boards are bad, does anyone know a way to verify the amount of OSP coating on a board, or a company I can get to do it for me? I am using PBfree solder of course. Also if anyone has any other ideas about how to verify the solderability of the board please let me know.

Q1.Does anyone know a way to verify the amount of OSP coating on a board? A1. There is no specification. Thickness is difficult to measure. Thickness is product related. There are at least six major suppliers. Years ago, here on SMTnet, J Medernach said, Make sure your supplier [fabricator] uses some sort of process control of coating thickness. If they don't have a photospectrometer or other type of measurement device for film thickness analysis, DO NOT USE THEM. Maybe you can use one of those photospectrometers down at your local university to check is your fabricator is meeting the supplier specification.

Q2. Also if anyone has any other ideas about how to verify the solderability of the board please let me know. A2. Listen, you don't care what is the thickness of the stinking coating. You care that the boards solder properly. Verify the solderability of the board the old fashion way ... ANSI/J-STD-003, Solderability Tests for Printed Boards.

Oxford Instruments makes a device called the OSPrey 800 that measures OSP thickness on the pads. We took a look at it last year because we have one line that uses OSP. It is pricey, and that's why we didn't order one, but if you use a lot of OSP, might be worth checking out.
