Does anybody know of information regarding certification as an X-Ray technician if we have x-ray insepection equipment here. PM's on these machines include taking radiation leakage tests.

I found out that our facility in Mexico requires that one of the engineers there be certified, but nobody has an answer for me on that qualification in Reno. Anybody know?

We don't know anything about regulations in Nevada. While you're waiting for others to reply, check this earlier posting here on SMTnet that's close to responding to what you ask: http://www.smtnet.com/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=1&Message_ID=57331

Good topic but still vauge. I have contacted the DoH here for more information. If I get anything, I will post it.

We are in the northwest and there was no state requirement for technician certification. The DoH encourage all to register their xray equipment with them and that was about it. We had their physicist come to our site to do leakage tests every time we moved our machine (this was a very large system). That said, you should still be trained on the system and have a good understanding of it before you do anything. I know some hospitals have a physicist on staff to verify xray systems.

Listen, get some training,. My brother Herb got sick as hell from playing around with our X-Ray machine. Danged fool stuck his head in there for sh*ts and giggles and had to take some time off. Had to get a system after that too!

Adam, Our X-ray requirements are due to state requirements (WV 64CSR23) has a list 'Subjects for Instruction of Radiographer Trainees'the main headers are A. Fundamentals of Radiation Safety B. Radiation Detection Instrumentation to be Used C. The Requirements of Pertinent Federal and State Rules D. The Registrant's Written Operating and Emergency Procedures E. Radiograpic Equipment to be Used I included this info in our work instruction for the operators running the equipment along with forms that are used during their shift.

Hope that helps.

Yes, you are all helping me a lot. I have been doing research as well and although there is no requirement to have a certified tech, we do have to have the machine registered with the DoH as well as have a person trained in radiation saftey who has to give training to those who operate the machine. State law also requires that we have a calibrated radiation meter on site at all times. Im still looking for more details though.

Sorry about having to have a meter on site. Our license is good for 3 years, so we don't have to have it checked often. If our dosimeter report comes back really high or if we just want to have it checked we can thru a local company any time.

I bought a geiger meter and put it together myself, it works just fine. You can buy it assembled for $305.00, or buy the kit for $195.00. Check it out here: http://www.geigercounters.com/Monitor4.htm

These are inexpensive radiation monitoring devices and it is possible, when they are calibrated to a Cesium-137 standard (at 600 keV), for the meter to read higher than the actual value at lower x-ray photon energies. We have no relationship, nor receive benefit from the company referenced above.

In PA there is an annual license required, about $200 per year. There is an initial inspection and at that time they will want to see radiation survey, installation documents that state individuals have been trained on the machine. They say they try to inspect again every 3 to 4 years, and they will want to see that same documentation again.

Try doing a search "Nevada X-ray machine registration"

After all , we are the Inspection and Rework Specialits and should know...we are the old core Nicolet Imaging Systems group in San Diego.
