Conformal Coating Equipment - Where to Start? | 3 June, 2009

Greetings,

We have a potential job coming up that would require coating with a silicone material (Humiseal 1C51 or equivalent). The volume will be high (in the 1000s/day). This is a low complexity, small card about 2.5" square in a 6up array. Only requires coating on the primary side.

I have no experience with automated coating and need some pointers on who's equipment I should be looking at. I believe that the material choice is flexible so any wisdom on UV cure vs heat cure in this application would be helpful.

Thanks

We have used an Asymtek C-740 for about three years now and its never had an issue even once. We spray Humiseal acrylic so I cant help you too much with the silicone but the machine itself is great.

Opt in for the little process control extras like automatic air control, fan width monitoring, etc to make the operators (and your) job much easier.

Cure: Compared to heat cure equipment, uV cure equipment requires less space, is faster, and is more expensive.

Hoss67, Instead of investing into a machine to coat these assemblies we (Diamond MT) are a coating house that can certianly meet your requirements as well as giving a vre competitive price. It would certainly save time and money trying to learn the systems and investing into machinery. I would even extend the oppurtunity to sample coat a few to give you the best up front pricing on these before you go and buy machiney. I would welcome the oppurtunity to talk with you about your requirements. Thanks

Hi I work for Asymtek, so you know my affiliation up front. I just want to mention that Asymtek makes conformal coatings sytems from Bench tops to full auto in- line systems. We have applications labs in the USA and around the world to help companies like yours test equipment before buying. Many of or sales staff have over 20 years (each) experience in conformal coating and can advise you on equipment that can best match your needs. We also have win3 partnerships where we work with the customer and materail supplier to ensure satisfaction. If you would like to contact me directly at 760-802-1641 or sadamson@asymtek.com , I can have our people get in touch with you. We frequently host free training session on conformal coating in conjunction with the leading fluid suppliers. Let us know how we can help you.

We have an excellent machine from a leading manufacturer of Conformal Coating equipment..... USI. This machine can run relatively high volume applications, and is in line, smema controlled. I suggest you watch the video of our machine in operation, and if you like what you see contact us for further details. We are a leading supplier of pre owned equipment and we offer the machine as complete and functional. Please view the machine in operation via link below. Thanks

Asymtek in-line machine with the Jet head hands-down. And since you will be coating silicone you should virtually have no touch-up after it exits the machine because of the higher viscosity of this material.

How does the cost of these machines compare to setting up a spray booth? The large outsource coating houses around here all spray from a gun in a booth instead of using machines. Is there a breakpoint in volume where the machines make more sense?

I'm not the Asymtek expert on this subject but you have to run a ROI study. When you buy a system you have to look at how much time you are spending on masking. If every job is a one board special, then you may be better off spraying on a coating. However if you are going to do many boards then you can spend a lot of time and expense masking connectors etc.

The other things to consider is how much time you are spending inspecting the board. Any time you bring a human into the operation, the quality can drift over time. With a conformal coating system you should get consitent uniformity.

Another factor to consider is how much fluid you are putting on a board. It is surprising how fast the cost of the fluids can mount up. If you have to much coating on some boards you are going to waste a lot of money. Automatic applications systems give you a consistent product each time.

Spray booths and dip tanks a very low cost pices of equipment, and basically you will have to inspect quality into the product, and have skilled operators. If your customer has a lot of automation in their facility then they will expect a certain quality from their suppliers. They will already understand that automated equipment argument, not to say that skilled people do not do a good job. Automated conformal coating systems are viewed as giving a more consitent, quality product.

What are the ballpark pricing figures for conformal coating machines? Benchtop through in-line?

The actual production volume is a good place to begin in determining the type of operation required. A rule of thumb is: Batch: LT50 parts/8 hour shift In-line: GT50 parts/8 hour shift

Hi Hoss67, I have had really good luck with PVA (Precision Valve and Automation) as Dave had mentioned also. Good pricing on all types of systems and good design crew for special applications. They also provide UV curing systems if needed. Hope it helps!

Does anyone have ballpark figures readily available for how much conformal coating machines cost? Benchtop and In-line? New and Used?

I am really curious and considering purchasing, but don't want to go stir up a hornets net of salesman at this point.

Thanks, B

I am rep for SCS and can state....

Another system provider is SCS (Specialty Coating systems) Precision Coat Systems. Have a stable robust XYZ platform, standalone, inline configuration, Spray + Dispense and can offer Ultrasonic Nozzle Options if required. They also offer sure systems from UV to Thermal.

Before you look at any machine you need to match the coating type, viscosity, and coating requirements before selection of machine and options. Do you need dual feed one for spray and one for dispense ? Does our coating suit Ultrasonics or not ? VOC-Free or Solvent based etc etc
