Anyone seen Black Pad on BGA components? | 9 July, 2009

Hi folks!

We seen to be getting Black Pad phenomenon, not on the PCBs, but on the BGA components themselves. These are high value items >$1000 each and once the pad has turned 'black it is almost impossible to re-tin it.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Do we have any comeback on our suppliers do you think, given that we placed the components onto the boards and subsequently removed them.

Hopefully the picture will attach! Thanks.

We can't tell from your picture that you have black pad, but it's not uncommon. Look here: * http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa5348/is_200606/ai_n21392950/?tag=content;col1

Yes it is very usual problem with BGA components, and you can repair that with method "needle+flux+solder".

Sorry english is not my native language.
