Am I missing something or is leadfree totally irrelevant in the case of Toyota's problems. Surely they are still using leaded solder???

As engineers who are supposed to deal in facts, we don't do our credibility any good by speculating to try to bolster our cause. I'm waiting anxiously for someone to blame the earthquake in Haiti on Pb free. There are plenty of real issues with Pb free, we don't have to invent them.

This article doesn't mention that their source is speculative and poorly written.

But I am curious has Toyota confirmed that they do use tin/lead solder? I mean an exemption does not mean they can't use lead-free. It's not legislated that they use eutectic is it?

Whether or not some fraction of their products are Pb free is irrelevant to the fact that people with absolutely no inside knowledge are out there speculating that Pb free is the root cause of Toyota's current problems.

I don't like Pb free any more than anyone else, but this kind of speculation is sensationalistic and irresponsible. We rail against the greenies who brought this on us for their inability to use facts, and here some within our own engineering ranks are guilty of it.

I shared a consultation report on Toyota’s sudden acceleration problems made by Keith Armstrong for the US Government’s NHTSA. It just lists the lead free move as a possible cause, nothing more nothing less.

And if Toyota wasn't completely lead free chapter 9 would'nt have been in the report.

If the report writers think Toyota is completely Pb free then this is further proof that they're just outsiders engaging in speculation. Toyota, like all car makers, is not completely Pb free by a long shot. Those of us who are automotive suppliers know this.

And, no, we don't supply anything that might be called into question on these recalls so I have no vested interest.

I agree with you I shouldn’t have used the word completely.

Let me rephrase, if lead free wasn’t a potential for contributing to the failure chapter 9 wouldn’t have been written.

A recalled Toyota Corolla went straight through the front door of a home in Georgia. Pretty much like the professor simulated but in real life.

Since Dave didn't respond i will. We shouldn't forget that even when using tin/lead solder the boards and components are still lead free. Parts that are not completely wetted by the tin/lead solder still have the potential for tin whiskering and other lead free related problems.

ARTICLE: Henning Leidecker, chief engineer of the electronic parts office of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and an expert on tin whiskers, said in the last four years his office has been contacted by seven major suppliers of automotive electronics inquiring about failures in their products caused by tin whiskers. He said his office has contacted Toyota offering to help analyze its acceleration problem, but hasn't heard back.
