I need an Oven | 16 April, 2010

We are looking at buying a new (or used) oven for low-mid volume Pb-free production.

I have looked at the smaller Hellers, BTU, vitronics, etc. and I am also looking at the Manncorp CR-6000.

I want at elast 5 zones, top and bottom, air (no N2) pin conveyer and mesh belt.

Anybody have any suggestions? Advice?

Particularily interested in feedback on the Manncorp.

I have owned Vitronics, BTU, ETS, & Heller. The Vitronics was by far the best oven for the price. The most reliable also. BTU is the worst one I have owned for reliability. Software bugs galore.

I need an Oven | 17 April, 2010

As a solder paste supplier I have profiled lots of different makes of ovens. I really like the Heller 1707. I have several customers who do lead free mid volume assembly with these ovens. They also seem to give shiny lead free joints.

I personally would be wary of heller1707EXL and as I have many customers that find them not too repeatable due to cross profile variance... MarkIII not sure about.

Always check perspective oven for this if you can...simple trick is to run blank PCB with 3+ TC across PCB generally in line, then run through reflow.

Then run same PCB 180 Deg and check profile, make sure you get a swap in any devation at each point, if they swap over it means you have un even distribution of transfer...

Effect of bad cross profile is narrower profile process window and if it varies even worse.

when I profile a customers oven / pcb I always try a check to see if there is basic oven temperature variation across its width....I have to say that in my experience I have never seen any significant variation on the Heller 1707EXL. Of course if you are looking at buying an oven then this sort of test is a must before final system acceptance.

Graham,

When performing such a temperature variation test, do you attach the thermocouples so that they are in contact with the PCB's pads or are they reading the air temperature?

If they are attached to the PCB, I take it you reposition the board after the first pass and then compare the variation between board temperatures / thermocouples? Is there an industry consensus on what’s an acceptable temperature variation?

I always fix thermocouples to pcb pads across its width. Then rotate it 180 degrees to check readings. If I am happy that the oven is giving results within a few degrees C then I'll crack on and set up a soldering profile. I am not sure what the oven manufacturers quote as thermal stability specs but I know what the soldering process window is for my paste so providing I can get within it on any pcb a customer is assembling then the oven is okay.

Yes I have seen Heller1707EXL's that are ok but many where not, even 1 Year old, it seemed to vary. I had one which varied, was ok for most time then changed, caused customer all sorts of headaches. I found out they had did some design issues and have to retrofit baffles and other remedies to correct for this...so that's just why I mention doing a check of the target oven is always best...

Another Brand worth checking out is Rehm, pretty good rep in Auto Industry and Laptop/Mother board markets etc. Great Energy usage / per PCb produced - this also a major cost of ownership thing...
