Hello: I would like to know if a radial capacitor (1000uf, 25V)should be placed flash to the board? Thanks, Bob

With proper lead forming, a radial capacitor (1000uf, 25V) can be placed flush to the board. If you place it as you describe, does your product application environment require staking?

Davef, Thanks for the reply. I do not know if a radial capacitor needs to be secured with adhesive. The board in question is a class 2 device where high reliability needs to be achieved. I can not find any book references where adhesive application is a requirement. Comments would be very much appreciated. Thanks again, Bob

One thing I have run into when placing cap's flush to the board is blow holes due to the plastic sheathing used around the cap. It would form a gasket going through wave and exhaust out of the holes therefore blowing the solder out with it. This cap was placed in the manual area as it was too large for radial. What I ended up doing is placing glue dots early in the process at SMT. The dots were just enough to let it exaust from the top of the board and my solder problems were resolved. Most radial machine placed parts are made with a slight flat stand off which keeps the material off the board, so I don't see a problem placing it this way. I place a 1000uf 35v now at radial with no problems and no staking.

Thanks for sharing your work experience. I found a reference material with IPC standard (IPC 610) that specifies an exact heigth that a capacitor needs to be placed, I will check this standard specifications in more depth.
