Leaded and Lead-Free products in single SMT line | 1 September, 2011

HI,

We currently have two SMT lines, one running leaded products and the other lead-free.

There is a recommendation to combine the two to increase the line capacity.

What do you think are the pros and cons, is there a risk in contamination ot the paste printer & reflow oven stations?

Thanks in advance for your inputs/replies...

We run lead free and leaded on all of our lines. When lead free first came out we went to the extremes to make sure not one atom of lead would get into the process. I remember we were told that the world would end if leaded products were within a half mile of lead free. Now a days all our scanners and test strips and green colored toilet paper, sits in the cabinets gathering dust. I am a little biased, I think this whole lead free hype was just a conspiracy to torture engineers and sell more equipment.

You can bet it was a conspiracy. Customers don't usually chew the PC boards inside their TVs,coffee machines or other electronic equipment. And if Lead is so dangerous why do we still run it and we still have to talk about problems about Lead. Anyway I would think that if you run both Lead and Lead free on the same line you will probably be able to find some lead in your Pb free products. there is an equipment to measure - you can do that to make sure.

What kind of equipments you were using to detect lead? Has any existing regulation to setup the limit of lead content to determine the lead free process?

My recollection is that RoHS limits for lead is 0.1% of the weight of any homogeneous material in the assembly.
