Quad IVc Feeder Base Electrical | 16 January, 2012

I have two new quad feeder bases and feeders (my machine came with none to start, and I can't find any electrical information on them. I have 4 pins at the each end (total of 4 connectors. And are in a 4 pin connector which looks identical to a standard ATX PATA power connector. I have one connector coming from one corner with 4 sockets, one of the 4 is blocked. The wire colors on that cable are white, 2x black x2 and red. Can someone point me to the correct wiring for this? Also, the feeders have far more than 4 pins on them, what are all the extra pins for?

When looking at the feeder base the right side wires should be white, black, black, red from top to bottom. The left side should be red, black, black, white from top to bottom. You have IQ feeders hence the extra pins. The IQ feeders are only required on IQ enabled machines but will work fine with non IQ machines. The only pins that are required are pin 1 +12Vdc, pin 7 gnd and pin 8 + 5Vdc

RLM, Thanks for the info. I have a few more questions for you or anyone. The plugs I have don't fit the way you say, in fact, exactly the opposite. I probably should have checked better, prior to asking, but at first glance it looked like they would go either way. Anyway, I measured the cables, and there is no voltage between any of the pins. I plugged them both in, the only way they would go, and stuck a feeder in, and I expected something to happen i guess, a light to come on or something. maybe i have to do something to test them? Also, I see there is a connector on the back, a sort of flat black connector that looks like the connectors that are on my nozzle holders. Speaking of the nozzle holders, are they supposed to go into the feeder base where the tab is pushed in by those blocks that are mounted to the top of the feeder bases? I could put them where the block is or isn't , and could plug that flat black connector into the nozzle holders (presumably to open / close them. Or I could try to plug those nozzle cables into the backs of the feeder bases, but I only have two cables with that connector (the flat black, probably 16 or so wires), and two feeder bases and two nozzle holders, so I have some choices to make and could use some guidance.

1. The flat black connectors that you are refering to are for the nozzle changers. 2. The nozzle changers can be mounted anywhere on the feeder base and their position must be taught using the handheld programmer. 3. If you have no power to the feeder bases make sure the feeder power switches are on. There are 2 on the front of the machine and 2 on the back (rectangular red switches). 4. BEFORE YOU PLUG ANY FEEDERS IN MAKE SURE THAT THE POWER IS CORRECT. Refer to my 1st post. You will ruin the feeders if the power is wrong.

I think I've got it.

1. Black flat connectors are for the nozzle changers, and whether or not the tab is pushed in or out (depending on whether they are placed in front of one of the blocks on the feeder base doesn't matter at all, the blocks are there for some reason that doesn't apply to my machine. 2. White 4 pin plugs are for the feeder bases, each feeder base gets 2. I'll have to cut off the plug and re-wire or hard wire to get the arrangement you mention. I'll do this tomorrow. 3. The switches on the front and back say front / right / back / left. I assume each of these goes to one plug (I have 4 plugs and 4 switches. This means I will need to turn on two switches for each feeder base since each feeder base has two plugs. 4. The flat black socket on the back of the feeder base is not used, it is there for some reason that doesn't apply to my machine. 5. Orange 4 pin plugs with one pin blocked are not used. If any of that is wrong, let me know before I blow something up please.

I rang out the bases, the connectors are common (i.e from top to bottom, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3,4-4). I also measured voltage on the connectors. Front and back don't have any voltage, and the lights don't come on when I press the buttons. Left and Right are red:5V, black: common, black: common, white: 12V. So if I hook them up as you say, with red on top on one side, and white on top on the other side, i'll end up connecting 12V to 5V.

I read back through your post. It seems that you do not have bases that belong with the 4C machine. I think that you have bases for Q series machines. That would explain why the connectors don't fit. You say that there are blocks on the feeder base. If they are for Q series machines these are fiducial blocks. They would have 2 bolts holding it onto the base and also have a small .060" fiducial on the top of the block. If they are Q series bases i beleive that they will still work but the wiring will be different. I would contact PPM and ask them if they will work. It also sounds that you may have a bad power supply.

Yup, that sounds right. I did try one with red on top on one side and white on top on the other side. Oops, blew a capacitor out of the back of the base. If anyone else Has these, here's how it goes to make them work: Top pin on both sides = +12V, middle two pins: 0V / Common bottom pin: +5V. You only need one side to be plugged in, and I believe they could be daisy-chained, assuming the wiring can support the current.

Which you can find at mouser, or probably digi-key or newark. This is for the larger capacitors, i think they're in groups of 4 on the back. Mine is working now.
