Tin/Lead HASL Plating in a Lead Free Process | 31 January, 2012

Anyone doing consigned work in the EMS industry has had this issue, I'm sure - Customer says they want lead free processing at the quote stage - PCBs they supply are tin/lead HASL. In this case, no HDI components and no BGAs.

What is the latest accepted wisdom in regards to this?

1. (NCMR) Non Conforming material report to your customer if you have signed up for a lead free job. Send everything back and tell him to replace the entire lot with correct material. or 2. Request a Change order from your customer, changing the original PO to accomodate the actual condition of the build.

Well, obviously you won't be providing a lead free product with a tin lead HASL board, but having tin-lead HASL boards does not necessarily prevent you from providing your customer a lead free PROCESS. (Hair splitting, yes) Educate your customer, and show him the err of hiw ways... Also remember that in any case the Tg of your PCB material must be sufficient for the higher Lead Free temperature requirements. Not uncommon in the CM world, quote HASL, get OSP, quote HASL get ENIG, on and on.... just make sure your Tg is good for the temp range for a start, and flow all info back upwards, and get approvals before soldering a single joint. `hege

Yes. Good info. We have other products that run lead free process with known non-RoHS compliant components. All of these are using LF process compliant fabs however so this is the first time we have been in this position. Thanks.

Yes. You need to educate your customer... On a side note, hopefully these boards hasn't gone through wave over your LF solder pot.. This will contaminate your solder pot and won't be cheap to fix it.
