Having a problem at power up, that our Philips Topaz X displays "DOWNLOAD IO STN.DATA NG" in red. It times out after about 5 minutes, then comes up. When we try to find the origin, it gives an error that the "Head Down sensor is OFF". If we go into the manual IO screen, we can't get any of the head outputs to do anything. The head inputs don't change when the heads are moved, even though the LED's on the sensors are changing.

Ok, so we figured out that if the LCS is connected, we don't get the error. So, the HDLC data buss gos out and back, or is terminated in the LCS.

How to remove the LCS? We try to go into maintenance screen to change the machine configuration, and it gives the error E1020 COMMAND ERROR PROTECT LICENSE has not been issued. What does this mean?

How do we remove the LCS from the machine Topaz X? We figured out how to put the jumper back on for the Emergency Stop signal, but when we remove the other connector, the head and converyor boards don't get the data over the HDLC buss. Do we need to change a dip switch somewhere to terminate the HDLC buss?

Ok, getting further. We have 3 Philips CSM machines, new to the Topaz. Sorry for all the questions.

We figured out that you have to press any key during the 6 second delay at power up. It then ask's for the password, or press the escape key to continue. What is the password?

Forgot to mention. To disable the LCS you need to disable it in the machine config - by changing Tray Changer to NONE. Of course for this you will need the password which is "specialist".

After setting this in the software, you also need to remove the cables. You will see a bunch of cables going from the machine to the LCS. Out of that bunch you will see 2 connectors very similar to each other with the difference being that one is male and the other is female. Just connect them both to bypass the Conveyor I/O board of the LCS. This will get you going to run the machine without the LCS.

Thanks for the password.

There is a 7 pin connector for the Emergency stop in and out. It has a mate with a jumper wire attached to the Topaz end. If you put the jumpered mating connector on this, the emergency stop errors go away.

The other connector is a 12 pin connector. There is no mating connector on the Topaz for this connector. The HDLC data comes out on this connector. When this connector is not connected to the LCS, the Topaz cannot program the Head I/O board or the Conveyor I/O board. There is either a loop back in the LCS, or differential signal termination to make the serial HDLC buss work.

What I can tell you for sure is that if you are able to run the machine with the LCS connected, then with the config settings changed to NONE and the connector shorted (with the connector already present), it should work for sure! I've done this myself on more than one occassion! I see no reason why this shouldn't work!

Figured out that you have to press Ctrl & Enter to get this screen to come up.

Also, to remove the LCS, you need to remove the "Y" cable to the left of the control box in the bottom of the Topaz X.

All works well now, but still can't get it to load more than 4 parts on the heads at a time. There are 8 parts in a row, 4 for the TCN nozzles, and 4 for the 74 fixed nozzles. They are all in order in the mount file. It will pick up the 4 for the TCN nozzles, scan them, place them, then come back for the 4 parts on the fixed nozzles, scan them, and place them. We can't make it load all 8 nozzles, scan them, and place them. Is it a limitation of the vision system?

Using the 72A FNC nozzles to place 3216 resistors, and 74F nozzles to place PLCC6 LED's. The LED's ar 5mm x 6.5mm x 2.4mm tall.

We are trying to optimize it to pick up 8 components, then move over the camera, then to the PCB and place them. In the Mount data, we load heads 2, 4, 6, & 8 with a 3216 Resistor, then them next 4 components are LED's, and are loaded on heads 1, 3, 5, & 7.

So, one would think it would fill all eight heads, then move over to the board to place them. It doesn't. It loads the four 3216 resistors, scans them across the camera, and places them, then comes back and picks up the LED's on the other four heads, scans them and places them.

What triggers it to go place the parts that are loaded on the heads?

Is it a head number that causes it to place the parts?

Can it only carry four parts over to the PCB at a time?

Can it only vision check four part at a time?

Do we need to put the eight parts in a group?

The algorithm only checks if all the 8 parts can be picked up by 8 heads without any mechanical interference during pickup or during rotation. In case if foresees any interference it divides them into two different charges instead of one. You can try giving the same component no. of R3216 for the heads 1 through 8 and you will find that all 8 components are picked up and passed in a single charge. If you want, just send me the vios text file of this program and I'll try to help you to better optimize.

Thanks for your input.

I heard about the component size from someone else as well. They said if the component is greater than 8.4mm, it will not load another component next to it on an adjacent head, which is only 16mm away. The PLCC6 LED's are 5 x 6.5, which is only 7.2mm diagonal, so I don't see why this would cause the problem.

I was also told that if the LED's were more than 8 feeders away from the resistors, that it will place the resistors, then come back for the LED's. My LED's are on feeder 23, and my resistors are on feeder 33, so this might be causing the problem.

I am going to fire it back up tomorrow, and do some more checking.

OK, did some more testing this afternoon.

First, I moved the LED’s from feeder location #23 to Feeder location 30. This is three down from the other component(#33) it is picking, so it should be able to hit them both at the same time for two of the picks. It didn’t make any change. Picked the first four, placed, then pick the second four, then placed.

Next, I swapped mount locations 4 & 5 so that they would be interleaved. It loads the first three, places them, then loads the fourth and places it, then loads the fifth, places it, then loads six seven & eight, then places them. Not what I expected.

I am doing something wrong somewhere, I just don’t know where.

Do the FNC nozzles need to change when nothing is on any of the heads?

The basic info database for the two parts is different?

I have attached screen captures of both components, and the mount screens.

Hi Scott,

Change the nozzle type to Type 73 for the LEDs and you'll find it's ok. I just tried it and with Type 73 it picked up the Cap and LED in a single shot but with Type 74 it went for 2 charges.
