Crown-Simplimatic 8080 FIFO Buffer problem | 28 January, 2013

Does anyone have any experience with these buffers? I have one that has come up with an error message "No PLC Driver." According to the documentation, the issue is the lithium battery in the operator interface. I have confirmed that the battery is dead and have replaced it. However, in order to recover from this error, the computer needs to be reloaded. I have no idea how to do this or what that even entails and the documentation does not say how to do it. I don't know where to get the sw, if that is what "reload the computer" even means. This buffer was used when we bought it. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Reese,

We had that problem a few years back. Simplimatic would not send us any information to fix it. We had to send the controller back to Simplimatic and have them fix the software in the controller.

I noticed your chiefs logo on your name. I am located in the Kansas City are and we may be from the same area. I would be interested in where you work and also where and how much you purchased the buffer for. I am currently sourcing a 8080 buffer myself and any information you could provide me would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that is pretty much what I found out. I had to send both the Unicor display and the PLC back to Simplimatic Automation to be reprogrammed. It was the Unicor that lost its memory, but they like to see the units operate together. It's crazy that it cost $300.00 because a $5.00 lithium battery went dead. We received the unit back yesterday, and to my dismay, the same error message came up, "No PLC Driver." I opened the battery compartment in the Unicor display and found that the battery had dislodged during shipping. That's been our luck this week. Luckily they are taking the unit back and reprogramming it at no cost. So a word to the wise: Make sure the battery is taped when shipped back to prevent this from happening.

I am a Chiefs fan and lived in the area from 1991-1993 (DeVry graduate). I am from Springfield, MO and have lived here most of my life.

Sorry, I don't recall what we gave for the FIFO buffers. I am looking into it and will let you know. Here is one company that deals in refurbished production equipment that may be of interest to you. We have bought many conveyors from them but they also sell FIFOs and just about everything else.

It was fun and easy to be a Chiefs fan 1991 to 1993. Not so much nowadays.

Yes it was. This was the time of Joe Montana's last hurrah. An exciting time to be a Chief's fan.

I had the exact same issue a few years ago at my last place of employment. It happened twice within two months on two seperate peices of Crown-Simplimatic Equipment. I immediately sorced and replaced every lithium battery in all of my Loaders, Unloaders, and Buffers. Well worth the five bucks a piece! Also, I had a CS Service Engineer warn me that the Touch Screen Displays in our units were no longer available. He advised me to snatch up anything we could find on the used equipment market just to get our hands on a few displays. (Our machines were circa mid 90's DOM)

Just an FYI

Just an FYI regarding the 8080 buffers: When you replace the lithium battery in the display module, replace the one in the PLC as well. Of course, you will need the machine turned on when replacing the batteries.
