SMT Component Polarity Guide | 24 July, 2013

I am looking for a poster (or anything) that shows Polarity Markings for different SMT Components. I would like something for SMT Operators and SMT Setup to be able to look at when training or when they are questioning the polarity of a part. If anybody knows where I can find something that would help please let me know!!!

I'm not sure what's out there on the web, but you could always make your own based on your own devices used. This might be better.

Hi,

We have a software tool (called QPlan) that can give you a solution for polarity and deviation problem on SMT machines. You can read about it on our site: http://www.proventustech.com. Also, you can send me an email: alexeis@proventustech.com.

Best Regards, Alexei

I don't know about a poster, but we just print the Data Sheet for parts with questionable polarity markings. Just remember, that not all SMT LEDs are marked by Cathode. We have ONE LED that we use that the manufacturer puts a dot on the anode side.

Hi,

This is a first step before you enter this info into component library. But this step is optional if you have enter this info before and you have a right tool to check your and simulate PCB manufacture.

We are just looking for something to get trainees familiar with the different polarity marking so they know what to look for.

IPC sells a booklet that should cover what you're looking for

Hi,

Our software solution (called QPlan) is using IPC standards and many more in simulation of SMT production.

What does your software do for providing component polarity in a reference guide?

Hi,

After you got datasheets of component shapes (only new one) and enter it to SMT machine library (including Polarity Mark and Position), you can use our software to simulate and fix all angles. Also, our software has tools to add Polarity information for SMT machine libraries that doesn't support it. In addition, you can merge all needed information (like ECAD, BOM etc) and do the simulation. Another features are deviation fixes, pitch and shape check, margins etc.

So, my suggest is inserting of datasheet information to the SMT machine component library and use our software to simulate and fix all possible failures.

I thought this thread was about someone wanting a simple guide so they can train their operators on polarity for a wide range of components, not a software package for programming. I am confused, but that happens from time to time.

Yes, that is all I am wanting is a guide to show new employees what to look for when a part has polarity, something that shows the dots, lines or beveled edges on ICs, or lines on caps and so on.

Then the ipc booklet I suggested a few posts up would be exactly what you need.

Instead of paying the $45 to ipc, you could always pay me $30 and I'll make you one..lol
