Quad 4C completely hangs on power up | 30 December, 2013

I've got a scary one for you guys and desperately need your help -

We just purchased a second Quad 4C and had some communication problems when we first turned it on (we're still working on that issue). To chase down the problem, we decided to start swapping out cards from our working 4C to see if one of the cards on the "new" machine was bad, or if it might be a cabling/connector problem. We wound up swapping all three cards from the front of the machine (EPCU, the motion/lifer controller card to the right of the EPCU, and the blue board (not sure what the blue board does). We did not swap the MVS vision board.

None of the swaps solved the problem. However, here's my very real and now critical problem - when we put all the original cards back in the original machine, it completely hangs on power up. There is no head or transport homing, all the lights on the machine panel stay on indefinitely (stop, run, single cycle, single step, vac toggle and reset), the HHT just shows a blank screen with a blinking cursor (none of the normal self-test text), and the reset buttons don't respond at all. Everything has power and all four motor driver cards at the rear of the machine show green lights, but absolutely nothing moves or responds. Now both of our machines are down! Any and all help will be very much appreciated.

Here is a couple of things to look at:

1. Make sure the boards are plugged into the correct position. Also just leave out the transport card to see if its hanging up the machine. The transport board should be the board all the way to the right. 2. Make sure you didn't plug the cables in backwards from the SRX Motor controller to the EPCU card. If memory serves me correctly.....they are not dummy proof and can be plugged into the wrong position. 3. If all else fails.....Try to clear the memory on the EPCU card. Just make sure you have all your mod codes backup up before you do this.

Good Luck, Bob

If all of the lights are on, on the operator interface panel usually that means the EPCU is defective or not fully seated correctly. If you swapped out the EPCU board from another machine you need to make sure its the same type of machine. If it has a different type of sensor in example quad align versus Cyber optics, which measure the components. Thanks, Mike Wylie mwylie@goppm.com
