Hi! Can anybody tell me if AOI in line can be the rational for not validating SMT line processes?

Sure! Everybody knows you can inspect in quality. That's the number one rule. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

That's right!

That's why we put TEN AOI's in line.

In series.

Just so we'd never have another defect.

An AOI is only as good as the templates taught into it.

How would you like to build 1000 boards and have them pass your in-line AOI, only to find out later, there was an incorrect reel loaded? A slightly different shade of light brown cap, but still wrong.

Always check the setup.

Thank you for pointing out the realistic direction !

Hi,

To maximize efficiency of the use of AOI machine inline, our customers perform statistical analyzes. Until few month ago, this analysis was done manually. These days, we have been implemented full working project which performs analysis of AOI machine defect information and link it to SMT machine(s) information. The system push up alerts for exception of common denominator that can be raised both fro AOI machine and from SMT machine(s).

Feel free to send me an email for more information: alexeis@proventustech.com

Hi Alexei, We have met in the past ( simona - PCB ) Thank you for this input, I might consider it !

Hello, validating a whole line can be tricky. I can advise you to validate each machine (not the transports) and then put them together in one document. For example SPI can validate your printer, or the printer service can provide you with some cpk's. For the SPI - service engineers should provide you with protocols of lab measurements. Then you can get a calibration tools or you can call every year for the service engineers to do it for you. On the place machine you can get the so called cpk board with different placement and then either give it to measurement lab with precise equipment, so they can give you some results or measure it with AOI - but be carefull, sometimes the tolerances of the AOI are bigger than the placement accuracy, then its no good. (depends on the AOI) The oven is tricky, but also the service engineers provide one year certificate, then you can do it with certified logger. AOI - you can do a MSA attribute study with a test board. If you have any additional questions feel free to write here or personally to me.
