MPM spare parts | 2 June, 2016

Hello,

I have now an old MPM with severely scratched Platens that need to be changed. From Speedline told me that this product is discontinued and the Platens are no longer offered. Do you guys know any other source, where I can buy them?

PPM is a good source for MPM spare parts. I have gotten parts for our MPM SPM from them.

In “SMT Equipment Parts & Supplies Marketplace. MPM Equipment Parts Parts & Supplies” [http://www.smtnet.com/parts/index.cfm?fuseaction=browse_mart&category=&mfg=120&condition=&listing_type=] lists 223 parts for MPM equipment.

In “SMT Equipment & PCB Manufacturing Machines Marketplace, MPM Equipment” [http://www.smtnet.com/mart/index.cfm?fuseaction=browse_mart&category=&mfg=120&condition=&listing_type=] any of the companies with * after its name would be a good choice.

If the damaged / scratched area you're referring to is where to rollers ride, we have a repair kit that would save you some money. tom@goppm.com

Scratches do not necessarily mean bad! Usually the forcer motor fails before a platen. The motors become weak or don't evenly distribute the supplied air, which causes them to tilt and drive into the platens. Mechanical misalignment of the VY forcers motors to the VX platen will cause them not track properly and the vision gantry will skew. The biggest issue is the air tubing to each forcer. This special tubing degrades and splits and the tech will keep stretching or splicing in different tubing which may last a short while and then require further repair. I have seen many machines with the tubing replaced with the standard poly tubing, but the stuff just ends up pinching and starving the forcers or breaking apart the IGUS tracks which then cut into the sensor or camera cables. As I said the platens or not usually the problem, but can cause a lot of air noise if they are warped. The warping comes from the forcers sitting in there park position for many years. The X is the most problematic as the Vision X forcer hangs from the platen rather than sitting on top like the Y axis. The platens can develop a bearing grove over a long period of time, see PPM comment for kit. I service a lot of MPM models with vision forcer/platen systems (AP Series, AP-Excel, UP3000 or Ultraflex) and most of the time the problems are caused by poor repair. These platforms are all still great printer models when fixed up properly. Cheapest parts available would be to buy your own used printer of your existing model and canabilize the parts.

thanks for the great reply. Now you make me think that we should change both the motors and the platens. That looks like a lot of money for a 10year old machine. It looks like it has some issues with the wiper as well. do you think 20K for parts and labor will be enough?

Sorry I didn't catch your message sooner! 20k is way to much. The odds of you having 3 bad platens and 3 bad forcer motors would be very unlikely, unless the machine was sitting outside or something. If it is a 10 year old AP then I assume it must be an AP Excel. If this machine still fits your applications then get it fixed properly, it's not old for a printer. With good used parts worst case I would estimate 6k for vision motion parts, quite possibly less. Then estimate 2-3 days of service to complete all the repairs, alignments and calibrations. Wiper parts? Motor, cylinders, $300-600. Or is this just an alignment issue?

Thanks for your help. We did call tech from Speedline and he got it fixed and working by exchanging just a few parts. There were a lot of custom modifications on this machine, don by who knows who and where, but the guy was very competent and fixed it.
