Transferring backed up files to new hard drive compaq prolinea 4/33s | 6 November, 2016

Hi! I have a Quad IVc pick and place that runs dos. The GUI computer is a compaq prolinea 4/33s. The hard drive went stupid mode and now wont respond. I have all of the data backed up. I tried transferring the files to a fairly modern hard drive (20gb). I didn't think that would work and it didn't. If I buy a PROPER replacement hard drive will I just be able to transfer the files and boot from that? P.S. It wont let me enter the bios

I think there are size limitations for the hard drive in those old computers. I would look on ebay and try to find an exact replacement and transfer your files onto it. I think it should work if everything is copied.

good luck

I have seen people use large, modern hdd's but they need to be re-sized to the limit of the hardware you are installing into which can be tricky. Also, its best to take an 'image' or clone an hdd as soon as you get equipment that is old or you suspect it could become an issue. Previous poster is right though- identical drive from ebay is probably your best bet at this point.

We have had some luck buying an exact matching hard drive and swapping the circuit board from the newly purchased drive to the old drive. I have done this twice in the last year and it has made the old drive work again.

Have you tried running your image under a Virtual machine. From this you may be able to work out the requirements of the original machine, and so have some parameters to port the image forward on a faster PC, like say a pentium or Pentium III while slowing down the execution speed or just leaving it to run a little faster and have the hardware keep every thing in Lock step. Another Option would be to move forward to the newer software that PPM offers for these old Quads.

Ok thanks for you help. I am up and running again. I had thought about the upgrade, but it would never pay off in my little garage operation.
