How to perform buy off a new Pick & Place machine | 23 January, 2017

Hi all,

Am new to the SMT process. I'm in the process of purchasing a new SMT Pick & Place machine and am trying to figure out how to perform the buy-off.

I'm from the semiconductor packaging background. For any new machine purchase, I'm used to sending my materials over to the supplier and getting them to setup the process. From there I will gather data on the machine and process performance (for eg. component XY theta positional data for a case a die attach machine) and sign off the buy off accordingly. The same process will be repeated once the machine is shipped to my facility but with more details thrown in.

Now for the new SMT Pick & Place machine, do I not buy off according to the component placement accuracy? The process does not seem to require high precision placement and subsequent reflow process provides a certain level of self alignment. So in this case, how and what do I buy off the machine?

Your collective advice is appreciated!

if process does not require high accuracy I would look for some older, less complex machines (lower maintenance and good reliability) but still quite accurate. at lower price you can have more of them in production or keep them for parts. having more than one older machine of same type/series is recommended when it comes to maintenance, diagnostics and parts.

Sorry if I'm not clear.

Machine selection is already complete and we are ready to issue the purchase order. What is not clear is how do I ensure the machine is meeting its stated specifications?

During installation, the tech should calibrate the machine. Have them demonstrate the pick/place capabilities while they're in house.

Most companies that I've dealt with would like you to have an example product to run while they're in house, as well. They'll show you basic programming, set up, and production. Evaluate the specs based on that and anything else you can have them demonstrate.

Most companies also provide a warranty and service. This should allow you to capture any issues, and have them fixed at no cost.

Cheers, ..rob

there is an IPC standard for machine accuracy and repeatability. Here it is how it works. You have to place certain number of parts on a specially designed PCB(that allows placing variety of parts on big part of the machine work area). After that you should go back and calculate the speed, the accuracy and the repeatability. This numbers will show Gaussian curve of how your machine is performing. This one(data below) is from ASM website and shows all machine parameters - the things you should check. You can start with(can it really place so small part? Is the accuracy as they say? Can I place this tall part(whatever spec is)? Can the machine run with that speed?)

Component Spectrum 0201 (metric) - 6 x 6 mm 01005 - 50 x 40 mm 0201 - 200 x 125 mm Placement Accuracy ± 41 μm/3σ ± 41 μm/3σ (C&P) ± 22 μm/3σ ± 34 μm/3σ (P&P) ± 0.05°/3σ Angular Accuracy ± 0.5°/3σ ± 0.2°/3σ(C&P) 40 mm 1 ± 0.1°/3σ(P&P) 1.0 - 70 N 1 Max. Component Height 4 mm 11.5 mm
