Timeout waiting for nozzle changer vacuum buildup. | 1 September, 2017

I get a Timeout waiting for nozzle changer vacuum buildup failure every time I go to run my 1998 GSMx machine. The problems seems to be that once in a while (it seems to be random) the spindle does not line up exactly in the center of the nozzle changer hole and the nozzle will not go all the way into the hole to create a good seal so that the proper suction cannot occur. I have 1 head on the machine and it is happening on several different nozzles on both changers 3 and 4.

I have cleaned the nozzles. I've reseated all of the nozzles, and redone the nozzle inventory (and found that it was incorrect). After fixing this, there was no change.

I used I/O diagnostics to fire changer up and activate vacuum. All activated nozzles were firmly held in place. All rubber gaskets seems to be good. There is no obvious air leaks that I can detect, the changer does pop up for the change.

I swapped nozzles around, reprogrammed the nozzle inventory, redid optimization... no change.

I would try to manually insert the nozzles into the nozzle changer holes but I can not figure out how to do that. Is that possible? How?

There is a thread on SMTnet at http://www.smtnet.com/Forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&Thread_ID=17749 but their solution is not clear. Rob, did you ever get your problem fixed? What did you have to do?

Any thoughts or tips that can help?

Try a fid teach on your changers. I don't recall how to do it but you'll find it pretty easy if you surf around. Also, the seals on the nozzles must be good and soft. If you can still get them new, I'd replace. Same goes for seals in changers. Clean the nozzle seating surface of your changers with S100 total cycle cleaner or something mild like that. No alcohol. Same for nozzles. Make sure you only have one empty hole in the changers.

The message might still be correct. Change the pneumatic cylinder on the nozzle changer - I have seen these to go bad.

We emailed off forum about this...and I'm wondering how things are progressing.

As I noted in email, our issue was the nozzle change was resulting in too many nozzles being out of the same vacuum channel on the tool box. I can't remember how it was configured, but, the vacuum channels on the tool box go to multiple nozzles. If the machine has slot 1 empty, and is trying to pull from slot 2, it won't be able to generate enough vacuum to get past this.

If that's not the issue (there are definitely numerous fail modes on these machines), you could also check you controller cards. But, you'd need to find which card controls the nozzle vacuum, I definitely can't remember.

Cheers, ..rob

If you have two changers and only one head, make sure there is only one open port (one changer should be filled up and the other should have one open hole.) The head should be full of nozzles as well.

As you mentioned go into the diagnostics and activate the changers with all holes plugged. Check the vacuum input status; if it shows true the sensor and input cards are working. If not, then try swapping the changer or diagnosing the sensor and connections.
