IPC-J-STD 005 USER PERFORMANCE INSPECTIONS | 20 September, 2017

Hi- I am attempting to determine if the "User Performance Inspections" on table 4-1 are required or are they just optional?

Section 4 para 4.2 only refers to Qualification Inspection and Quality Conformance Inspections that are performed by the paste manufacturer. No mention of User Performance Inspections.

Section 4.4 discusses Qualification Insp., Section 4.5 discusses Quality Conformance Insp. No Section on User Performance Insp.

Table 4-1 does have a column titled User Performance Inspection that indicates 6 tests are "R" which would seem to indicate "required".

My issue is that two if these six tests require expensive equipment and are time consuming and difficult to perform. Para 4.1 does say that the User Performance tests are the responsibility of the user, but no more is said about them.

I believe that they are intended for the user to use if the user thinks he is having issues with the paste or wanting to extend the shelf life of the paste, or just for monitoring purposes if the user uses a large volume of paste. For our small volumes, if we have any paste issues we would just order a new jar or two rather than spending days testing the paste.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I agree with you.

IPC Committee 5-24b Solder Paste Task Group is responsible for maintaining J-STD-005, Requirements for Solder Pastes. They generate "standards, test methods, and a handbook that reflects current practices in all aspects of electronics manufacturing that involve solder paste." Chair: Karen A Tellefsen, Alpha Assembly Solutions Vice Chair: Beverley Christian, HDP User Group Staff Liaison: Tom Newton

Contact information for Karen, Bev, and Tom is fairly easy to find on the web. Give them a week or so, because they're probably covered-up with Committee meetings at SMTAI 2017
