Best way to identify moisture sensitive reels on a machine | 25 January, 2018

When leaving a job set up on pick and place machines, it is important to return any moisture sensitive devices on reels to a dry cabinet overnight to reduce the exposure time. What are some ways to identify which reels need removed? A sticker placed on the reel is not easily visible when reels are next to each other on the machine. The feeder could be marked but then the MSL ID needs to follow the reel once removed from the feeder. Do most users remove the reel or keep the reel on the feeder when placed in a dry cabinet? Is there something on the pick list that would highlight MSL devices? Your thoughts are appreciated!

The best way is to have proper system in place that shows which reel is stored where. Now mycronic, juki, fuji and more have these towers(MSD), where you can keep your parts in. It is a very elegant solution with a beautiful software that tells you which part goes where. Based on the tower design and feeder design, you can have parts on feeders in the tower(mycronic can do it for sure). some machines have huge feeders, so it will be physically impossible to have them in towers or dry cabinets.

Put a fluorescent sticker on the feeder and reel.

Hello, Mr. Evtimov is right. What kind of pick and place machine do you have? Implementing the MSL into a datamatrix barcode is the first step. Then you might want to use your machine's software solution (if possible) to track this. Another solution is to hire a programmer to do this for you, but maybe more expensive in the end. Old-school solution is to manage it by a stamp and check-list together with implementing a few simple rules. But this is operator dependent and may cause problems.

You can also get dry cabinets that you can wheel your feeder carts directly into (if you have quick change carts) when not producing to extend floor life.

Thank you all for your feedback. While the new smart reel towers are the ideal, we simply cannot afford them or better pnp equipment at this time. However for the short term, probably putting colored stickers on the reel edge folded over so it is visible from the edge is a starting point. Our machines have intelligent feeders that utilize 1D bar codes and we have a programmer on staff that could write a simple tracking application that tracks time out of the dry cabinet. I still think our ERP system should have a field to enter the MSL info. Then you know for sure.

Hi Dean, which ERP are you using? Maybe someone else has the same system and has got around this.

We did by re-purposing a field.

Hi Dean,

You may be in luck, we have another Infor ERP, Visual, and we have added MSL data via something called USER DEFINED FIELDS in the part record (Part Maintenance). It then comes through onto the part labels.

It's worth asking you local support if such a thing exists in SyteLine as they will be familiar with both systems.

If so you could track the time of issue to the feeder via a report per works order.
