Placement Equipment for 17 x 23 Backplanes?

Placement Equipment for 17 x 23 Backplanes? | 17 November, 1999

We are starting to place SMT resistors and caps (1206) on large backplances, (17" x 23"). The mix of parts are low, just a few different part numbers at this time. The volume of boards is also low, 50-200 per week.

I am looking for recommendations to the type of placement and reflow equipment that would work good in this application.

If this is going to be the beginning of a lucrative and fast growing company you probably want to go with Fuji ( CP series ) , it's by far the fastest and longest lasting. If money is a big issue at this time and you want to get the biggest bang for your buck take a look at the Universal FlexJet. It can place passive components with great speed and accuracy but can also place large QFP's when the need arises. Universal is probably the most user friendly ( program/ maintanance ). That's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

Well, I was using a quad QSV-1 for boards this size. Not the fastest, but it was able to handle the large boards in a pass through machine. Keep in mind the board thickness, as well. Anything over 0.2" will not fit in the clamps of the conveyors.

As far as an oven goes, don't settle for anything less than a 7 top/bottom zone machine.

I am a Siemens person myself but you won't get 23", you can get 20 though and I believe you could feed in a 23" board length wise. If your parts fit in a 20" area 80F4 is the way I would go. My second choice would be MYdata. They are the large board King. Good equipment, fair price and flexible. There are lots of good ovens out there, I use Seho. Very stable machine. The design is quite a bit different than most machines. Top side only heat with variable convection. Cost to operate is very low. We do VERY dense double sided boards with very high yields.

Another 2 cents. Keep collecting you'll be rich.

Use Mydata. I've built huge backplane boards, round boards, 1/4" thick boards, 1"X24" boards, 1"X1" boards, L-shapes boards; all without any carriers or tooling. If you buy a MY15 you can increase the board size to 5'X2' (60"X24")...

As for ovens, there's NOTHING I couldn't reflow with my 5-zone Heller (top & bottom heat). I've reflowed brass shields to 1/4" nickel plated aluminum. The only reason for more zones is faster throughput, use a 10 zone if being fed by a high speed fuji line. I wouldn't go below 5 zone though.

With the low volume and low parts mix Quad 100's, Quad IIIC"s or Quad IVC's would be a low cost method of placement. As for ovens most any 5 to 7 zone oven will work for you.

FUJI has a Large backplane machine that can go as large as 23"x27" and up to 8mm thick in both chip placement and fine pitch. If you would like more detailed information please respond by e-mail.

Give Contact Systems a call. A standard Contact machine will fit boards as large as 26" x 18", and place parts at a rate of 13,000 CPH. They have both new and refurbished machines to fit within your budget. I would certainly not recommend going less than 5 zones for a reflow oven for your application.
