Merging BoM and XY Data | 22 February, 2019

Is there a need for a simple application to merge a bill of material with the xy placement data into a single (or top/bottom) files for machine programming? ie. add a part number column to the xy data, including "N/A" for parts not found in the BoM? I have had a customer approach me with this requirement, but want to know if this is a one off need or - if I build it, will it actually be useful to anyone?

Look on this forum for a link to SMTMaestro which does just that. Fab3000 is almost there with its BOM tools and has a bunch of handy features, its just that they have not considered this use case instead focusing on recreating the centroid from gerber data and then merging in the BOM.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has written a tool for this, however mine is very rough with no error handling and currently requires the input data to be preformatted into a specific form.

SMT Maestro is the easiest to use by far, unfortunately it seems to have been wiped from the web.

Bruce I think this is a useful tool. I think this sector needs a collection of tools like this out there priced sensibly, with that price displayed up front on the website & a mostly functional demo version readily downloadable. I find the insistence of many to make the price of something hidden until you request it very frustrating.

Hi there. Sorry I haven't responded sooner. The video I posted was a very preliminary trial that I developed as an option to my BoMCompare application. BoMCompare is a tool that can compare Bills or Materials of various file formats (xlsx, csv, txt, etc.) as well as various content formats (eg. Reference Designators all in one cell, in multiple cell/rows, separated by commas, or spaces, etc.) and quickly generates a report showing the differences between two boms. Typically Rev A vs Rev B or Customer BoM vs BoM entered into the MRP (post entry verification). It can also compare a BoM vs the SMT machine program output to ensure all parts are captured, etc. Base price is $1,595.00; with SMT Compare option is $1,795.00; SMTMerge option will probably be $1,995.00 (depending on interest).
