Hello SMTA,

We're currently considering purchasing a low-cost 3D Printer to make "masking boots" for connector and component protection during conformal coating.

Our assemblies have myriad variety of components and connectors that make traditional masking a challenge for both cost and time.

Recommendations on a printer and necessary software would be a huge help.

Thanks!

Joe,

Go for it. We purchased an Up-Box printer several years ago for exactly this reason. It was less than what they were charging us for a custom mask mold. It paid for itself within the first month. I'm not recommending this printer but I am saying that the idea is a good one.

3DXTech makes an ESD ABS filament that we use for our masking blocks and even a few one-off matrix trays for custom and loose components. Have fun!

Yeah it seems like a no-brainer. Thanks for the tip on the ESD-safe filament. I knew it had to exist.

I've narrowed down a few models that seem perfect for this at a surprisingly low price point. Most of them come with their own designer and instruction-to-print software. Some only need CAD.

Can you suggest cost effective 3D printer for making conformal coating caps. And please let us know what you have considered.

Can anyone suggest good STL software to use with the UP-BOX 3D Printer?

Is any old CAD program compatible?

We use Solidworks but any 3D modeling software that outputs an .stl file will work. I use Tinkercad for my home projects. This software shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Solidworks but it is free, and you can create some good designs with it once you get to know it. There are good tutorials on youtube.
