Metcal CV-5210 Solder Station | 3 April, 2019

Hey,

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Metcal CV-5210 soldering iron and if so how has your experience been with this product and the accompanying software?

Thanks in advance for your responses

Hi Matt,

We've used the MX-5210 version, and they are good irons. Regarding the cross-breeding with a Christmas tree, we're not sold.

We evaluated the Metcal CV-5210 and found that while it is a solid iron, the "Connection Validation" features were so quirky that our operators had to completely turn off the CV features. When Connection Validation was enabled, we had a massive amount of false positives (the LED turning red rather than green) occurring during soldering, and it would not work properly during thru-hole soldering. THere were a host of other common situations where Connection Validation would not work: during drag soldering for example. Also it forced the operator to skip around when soldering qfp's (or it would give you a false positive red LED because heat was building up). A great idea, but the Connection Validation seems to be buggy and very gimmicky and would probably require extensive re-training to get our solderers to properly use. Also, it's a very expensive soldering iron (about $800 USD) and tips (start at $26 ea). You are probably better off with going with an earlier Metcal MX-500 or MX-5200 if you have to have a Metcal.

This feedback is greatly appreciated! I had my reservations on the connection validation features, as you said good in theory but I really wanted some practical information without having to purchase to get an extended feel on our various applications.

We are already using both Metcal and Pace equipment but this caught my eye after reading some articles about intermetallics which may be more sales propaganda than anything in order to push for sales of connection validation systems

Thanks again for the feedback
