Automated Labeling for SMT Assembly | 19 October, 1999

I'm looking to automate my PCB labeling. I've looked into a couple of machines but haven't seen much to spark my interest. A friend working for Solectron mentioned a pick & place style machine called the Dataplace he had heard of but didn't have any info to follow. Anyone have any insight (especially first-hand users) into this machine or others?

Why use labels? They are expensive, fall off, get mangled, etc. If you directly mark the boards, you'll probably save money, enhance traceability, etc. One major contract manufacturer projects payback at 7 months just eliminating label cost and going to laser marking boards. Or you could screen a pad and inkjet the blank boards. Either way, your costs go down, you can serialize or lot label, pack 10 times the info in the same space, add readers and you can "error proof" the line by verifing the program on the shooters before each board enters it. Total unit level traceability for manufacturing process control, warranty, etc. Within a couple of years, your customers will probably require it - now it is a competitive advantage. The Brady PAM 5000 may work for you as well. I think they have a web site. This machine is smema compatible. It's automatically places barcode labels onto pcb's within an 18"x22" area with .020" accuracy. The labels can be placed at 0 or 90 deg onto the pcbs. The labels are printed just prior to application so there is no need to preprint. The label is scanned after application to confirm placement and serial no. SIEMENS introduced recently new feeder made by HOOVER-DEVIS (USA) which will work similar to normal componenet feeder BUT only on SIPLACE machines.

I've personally seen it, and other competing machines, in action in production environments...unlike the others, it is a FAST, extremely reliable, well-engineered, and flexible automated labeling system. Thanks for the input. I took a brief look at the Brady machine on their website. I think their latest is the PAM 6000. It didn't appear it could keep up. My most difficult application is to put 42 labels on a 21-up board in under 1 min 20 sec. I'd like to scan the barcode labels in that time too.

Tell me more how the PAM 5000 has worked for you. What is good and bad about it? Why are you selling them? How much are you selling them for? Have you been able to connect it to your network / server / database?

We considered direct marking already John. It's not very practical for us to do that. We need to put labels on components as well as boards. A laser or inkjet would cause us to have to change too many things in our processes. We'd still need to do labeling too. Most of our boards are pretty squeezed for space. What did you mean by "pack 10 times the info in the same space"? The same space as what - a label? John
