Automated or Semi-Automated Thermal Gel Application | 8 October, 2019

Hello SMTA,

I am looking into the possibility of automating, or semi-automating the application of thermal gel (THERMA-A-GAP GEL8010) onto the bottom of some power supplies installed in PCBs. As of now I will need to apply approx. 5 mils of this gel across the entire bottom surface of the supplies before installing the PCBs into housings.

I have some questions in to engineering on if I can apply larger volumes in spaced intervals, and allow the pressure of the installation to spread the gel to the required thickness across the surface.

Are there dispensers (cost-conscious if possible) anyone recommends that will allow for a volume of this particular gel to be applied consistently? I envision dots of this gel being applied across the surface, rather than constant lines. What does everyone recommend for this type of application?

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

Could you provide images of the part and the install location? I'm having a hard time picturing what it is that is required.

What is the advantage of dispensing dots over dispensing a line? I don't see any reason why dots wouldn't work. You might have to experiment a bit to dial in the right volume and spacing to get the desired end result, but it shouldn't be hard.

Fisnar makes some reasonably priced entry level dispense robots. PVA would be the next tier up, they make semi manual bench top units and fully automated inline units. Asymtek is another good supplier, but "cost conscience" is't the first adjective that springs to mind...

Insert standard: "I receive no benefit nor compensation from the aforementioned companies."

Unfortunately I don't have the product in hand at the moment. I'm trying to pre-empt the next run. I will see if I can get an image!

I'm not sure there is so much of an advantage as much as it may be just easier to apply? New to dispensing, especially in this application, so I'm mainly brainstorming at this point.

I will look into the manufacturers you listed though. Thanks for that!
