X-Ray Gage Study Question | 31 August, 2020

Can anyone provide any insight to an appropriate way to apply a Gage R&R study to an x-ray inspection machine? We have a Vitrox V810 S2EX machine that we would like to perform a measurement system analysis on. What methods do you use? Which type of Gage R&R is applicable? Is there a particular package type used for the measurement data? Any and all information would be great!

I would contact Vitrox and ask them how they verify repeatability. They might be able to do it during your scheduled PM's.

What exactly do you want to measure with it? The gage R&R is going to be based on what you want to measure. I have mostly seen X-rays used to make judgement calls not measure something. I'm guessing a customer or manager requested it?

Normally, on X-Ray will conduct attribute GR&R which measure capability of operators to judge defect and not on equipment itself.

Concur. We did an attribute study earlier this year using 3 operators, and comparing the results and measuring the standard deviation between them.

In particular we are looking to measure the repeatability of the voiding measurements for thermal pads on QFNs. There is some concern that given the nature of AXI programming with upper and lower boundaries set by a programmer to detect a defective solder joint, that there is potential for escapes if the measurement is not repeatable. Yes, our customer has requested this.

Than, shall try to find 10 boards with mixture of good and bad samples. Measure it with three different operators and three different times. It will able to tell, machine repeatability and how to troubleshoot it.
