We have a DEK 265 Horizon and it exhibits a problem with conveyor belts. When I power up the DEK and try to paste boards, it fails to initialize the conveyor. I have to go into Maintenance and select cycle boards on rails. This too fails, but when I try to run boards again, it finally works.

Does anyone know what could be causing it to initially fail?

I assume you are saying that the rail width doesn't initialise when you initialise machine, but when you go into diagnostics and then exit diagnostics it initialises properly. (Not sure what cycling board on belts has to do with it). Have seen, on multiple different DEK machines, failure in stepper driver where it repeatably does not home on first attempt but does work properly on all subsequent attempts. Try swapping associated dual stepper driver associated with rail (be aware and swap DIP SW / jumper configuration) to see if it alleviates or issue moves to different axis.
